Class Three
Science with Mr. Cramp
7th Nov. 2008

Mr Cramp told us that when we go to the High School our science lessons will be split into Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
Chemistry
For today’s lesson he showed us some chemistry experiments. He explained that chemistry is basically about changing one thing to another.
For the first experiment we had to use a filter paper to separate some white powder from a liquid. We watched the liquid drip through whilst the powder stayed in the filter paper.

Next Mr. Cramp showed us how to separate salt from a liquid by heating it. He used tongs and a burner under a tripod and some gauze. He showed us what happens when you heat magnesium oxide.
For the next experiment we had some water in a pot and a yellow powder was sprinkled over the surface of the water. We then had to dip our finger into some washing up liquid, and place it on the water. The powder jumped away from the washing up liquid.
We rubbed a greasy hand cream into one hand and a water-based cream into our other hand to compare the textures.
Mr.Cramp showed us how to grow crystals in a test-tube and how to make lots of bubbles by mixing bicarbonate of soda, washing up liquid and vinegar.
It was a fun lesson!
